To maintain the beautiful look of the wood on your deck, routine maintenance is recommended. We hope our suggestions on cleaning and staining your deck will help you maintain your deck easily.
Before cleaning your deck, remove any existing deck coatings. We recommended using Superdeck's Biodegradable Wood Stripper, which will remove any latex or oil based stains, paints, and varnishes. Apply this in a thick coat for 15-30 minutes, misting it lightly with water to reactivate its power, then rinse it off using a power washer or garden hose.
After you have stripped the wood, use Superdeck's Detergent and Wood Cleaner to remove stains and discoloration caused by dirt, mildew, and mold. You can use a brush, a roller, or a sprayer to apply the cleaner, then wait 15-30 minutes before rinsing thoroughly with a power washer. These products are biodegradable and will not harm vegetation. Make sure you wait at least 24 hours before applying a stain or sealer to the wood.
Once the wood as been thoroughly cleaned and has dried completely, you can stain or paint your deck. Several products that we recommend are Deck Gold, Superdeck, and Cabots.
Deck Gold is our own private label stain. It is a transparent sealer and stain in one. This product is a unique blend of resin, pigment oil, mildewcide, and UV protectors that penetrate deeply into the wood to protect and preserve it. Deck Gold can be used on all types of woods except redwood.
You could also use Superdeck brand Exterior Deck Stain, which is a natural oil, transparent stain that is designed to maintain the beauty of your wood. It is available in 10 natural wood tones for redwood, cedar, pine, and fir. Seven natural wood tones for pressure treated wood are also available.
Cabot's has a variety of stains ranging from oil based to latex based products. It is available in semi-transparent or a solid color.
Be sure to read the labels carefully on the products you choose and make sure you understand how the product will perform. The life expectancy of all stains depends on weather conditions, exposure and the stain itself. Choosing a high-performance product will extend the life of your job.
